IE7 Reviews

Update: See below.

Since IE7 got out of the starting blocks yesterday some decent reviews are starting to come in.

The most detailed review that I've seen so far is the Mezzoblue blog which looks at long list of IE6 rendering bugs and checks them off as not fixed in IE7.

It appears that IE7, like the other IE's can't officially be run at the same time as other version of IE. Although there is always the trick to running multiple versions of IE in the same OS.

The Register has a horror story about how IE7 nukes Google, Yahoo! search. Robert Schoble got cross with this report and I'd guess that Schoble is probably right in saying that any breakage to Google and Yahoo is not deliberate.

Microsoft may have made a rod for their own backs here. There has been a long history of accusations of Microsoft doing this starting with breaking Lotus with each new version of DOS and more recently with breaking MSN rendering on Opera. I guess people are bound to think the worst if they feel they've been burnt before.

Joe, This was a very helpful post; thank you. I've posted some detailed comments about this topic on The Internet Stock Blog at: http://www.internetstockblog.com/2005/08/the_browser_war.html and would greatly appreciate your comments on them.

Re: IE7 Reviews

The first thing I noticed was that IE7 had wiped-out my Cookie folder. Because cookies have caused me trouble, I always opened up the cookie folder located in: C: / Documents and settings/ user/ Cookies. But the folder is no longer there, I ran a search and it came up with nothing. WHAT HAPPEN TO MY COOKIE FOLDER? I would delete cookies as I browsed the web using All-in-one secretmaker. One click on; “Initialize all cleaners” and bye bye cookies. I don't know if cookies are really gone now or what. I just did a scan with ZoneAlarm and the cookie Ads.addynamix was found, that is why I like to see which cookies a present and when so I can delete them when I want. I hate this!! Two: the tool at the top of IE7 are not as handy, there in drop down menus on the right side of the browser and I loved IE6, when I wanted to save a web page to the desktop I would click; file/ send copy to desktop. Now I have to go to the drop down page menu and click save, then click where “in desktop” then save. This may not be the biggest thing in the world, but just is more time and less handy. The whole feel is a bit off. A lot of work that hasn’t shown much improvement if you as me. Hopefully security has been improved as much as Microsoft has claimed. Until I find out what happen to the Cookie folder I am just not going to trusted IE7!

Re: IE7 Reviews

I've found where the cookies folder has gone to. Please look at this blog entry to find the procedure.

Re: IE7 Reviews

I experienced sultiple crashes of the program itself, not the system. Using Ghost, I uninstalled it within 48 hours and returned to pre-IE7 state.

Re: IE7 Reviews

You can still access your cookie folder in IE7 but you must untick "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and "Hide Protection Operating System Files" in the Tools, Folder Options/View menu.

Re: Manually Managing Cookes in IE7

Perhaps better to leave the operating system files protected and go to the IE7 Tools menu -> Internet Options -> General Tab -> Browsing history -> Settings section -> [View Files...] button. You can see everything here, and can manipulate cookies as well.

Re: Manually Managing Cookes in IE7

Thanks so much for your post! However, I want to mention that the list of cookies you mention is not the same as the list that is now protected (???)! Now, if I click the "delete cookies" tab, will both lists be deleted or just the unprotected list? I'm too cautious to try. Thanks again!

Re: IE7 Reviews

What happened to the menu bar? Why would they hide it by default? I know you can set it to display all the time but why should hidden be the default? To pin favorites on the side you have to click 2 places now. I don't understand the trend to make things look prettier at the expense of ease of use.

Re: IE7 Reviews

Everything is screwey the way its arranged in IE7. Why is the address bar at the very top and the built in toolbar buttons at the bottom right? For main control you now have to click all over the place, in IE6 the main control buttons were all grouped together. I feel it should be arranged starting from the top, Menu Bar, Built in Button bar, addon button bars, Address bar and then tab bar. I don't think the built in button bar that has the "Home" button should be part of the tab bar. Is there a way to rearrange these?

Re: IE7 Reviews

The interface is a nightmare. Where's the menu bar? Switched off? Egads - usability taking severla thousand paces backwards. I can't even download IE6 anymore to get rid of IE7!!!

Re: IE7 Reviews

IE7 has a sh*te user interface. Why is the address bar so long? Why cant I shorten that address bar and put the home and refresh and stop buttons up there in the center of the screen instead of having to track all the way to the RHS of the screen to find them? Most control is on the left, we read from the left, we type in URLs from the left so WHY are the buttons on the RHS? I also agree with posters here that they pretty thngs up and try to make them appear cool and friendly and stable to all user levels but it frustrates the hell out of those of us who like to work in our own ways and are able (usually) to customise things outselves. WHO are MS to tell us how to use and arrange an interface that some of us have to use every damned day? Do they really know better? Course they dont. They piss me off sometimes.

Re: IE7 Reviews

IE7 is a joke. I recommend anyone who has a real network with real applications that have to actually perform for mission critical reasons avoid IE7 at all cost. the thing is full of flaky bugs, and is so imbedded into the OS that it makes it flake out as well. I dont care what anyone from Microsoft says, web browsers are supposed to be light weight and they for sure arent supposed to be so deeply embedded into the OS that you cant remove them or remove updated version to them. Microsux has had this issue forever and they didnt even build the first releases of IE anyway so they probably dont even know that it behaves the way it does. If anyone is having weird issues across a network and cant seem to pin point it, my suggestion would be to download Firefox or something of that nature. Your over the wire Apps will just magically work..

Re: IE7 Reviews

I also had big problems with IE7. I couldnt access internet options from control panel, nor could I find temp files or cookies in documents and settings. The way it was set out was def not user friendly. Anyway in the end I took the bull by the horns and uninstalled IE7 from Add and remove programmes. I had already downloaded IE6 setup. When i rebooted I clicked on IE and, lo and behold, IE6 was back and I could also access internet options again. I didnt even have to instal IE6. I am now one happy bunny again :)
