Laptop Warranty Scams

Do you buy an extended warranty when you buy a new laptop? I think there might be good reasons for buying - and with Dell, at least, there might be a warranty scam.

Outside of computers, electrical stores push extended warranties quite hard (at least they do in the UK, I can't say I've bought a Hi-Fi, etc in the US). Clearly they do this because they make money from it and this means that for most people, the extended warranty will be a loosing proposition.

However I strongly suspect that laptops are different - I always buy extended warranties on laptops and I've never lost out so far; the extended warranty has always cost me less than repair costs.

I accept that I'm not statistically significant, so I'd be interested in your comments. I'm also aware that manufacturers must do the sums, and on the face of it you'd expect that they wouldn't be giving handouts. But hang on...

If extended warranties were a win for the laptop retailers, you'd expect then to push them harder, but in my experience they don't, and this really tells when your warranty runs out. My experience of both Dell and others of Apple is that neither of them remind you when your warranty has run out. You have to remember yourself. It's almost as if they don't want you to take them up on the offer.

Maybe laptop manufacturers have to offer extended warranties or their goods look shoddy. And they charge the most they can, but if they charge too much, their goods look like they are expected to break.

So for many manufacturers the extended warranty is a loss leader. They charge what they can, but they are never going to cover their costs.

To some extent Apple looks bad compared to Dell - it costs around 50% to insure a MacBookPro than it does for an Inspiron. Are Inspirons really that much more reliable? Maybe Dell want you to think so. Maybe Apple feel they can charge more for offering you a Genius in a black t-shirt. Either way, you should probably always buy extended warranties.

But there's more. I think there's a scam with Dell warranties.

My Inspiron recently refused to boot. Again. (To date, I've had the screen and motherboard replaced - maybe I'm up for another motherboard)

I checked the extended warranty site to discover that my warranty had run out without warning. However, I was allowed to buy another one! So it appears that you can wait until your laptop breaks and then purchase an extended warranty. If your laptop doesn't break then you win. If it does break then you get the fix for the cost of the extended warranty.

Apple seems to be wise to this - they don't allow you to buy an extended warranty once the original has timed out. Is this a scam against Dell?

Dell waranties are scams. They do not honor it to fix any problems. And I purchased the next day home service - ha - they won't schedule anyone to come out - they just say that no matter what is wrong it ISN'T covered under the warranty! Liars and scammers - that's how I feel about Dell. A complete waste of money - buy from someone reputable instead!!!!

Re: Laptop Warranty Scams

I agree, the Dell warranty is a scam. In my case my computer screen went out THREE days after the warranty expired, I called Dell and they told me I was SOL basically. I know of NUMEROUS people who've had similar problems, their computers are fine until days or a month within their warranty expires, something goes wrong with their dell laptop. I swear they have a crash code in the computer set to go off after the warranty expires! I WILL NEVER BUY A DELL AGAIN!!

Re: Laptop Warranty Scams

My dell warranty was about up and the LCD was dying and the motherboard needed to be replaced.  When I called they tried telling me that they would not replace the motherboard because that fell under normal wear and tear... After throwing around a few choice words they had a box to me the next day and had it back to me by the second day.  They not only replaced the LCD and the motherboard, but they replaced the power cord, Heat sink, and a few other things.  Just give them a few choice words and talk the supervisor!!

I used to work for DHS (Dell Home Sales) in their Waco Texas USA office. That office has since been moved to a nearby town. Warranties, home repair and 'gold' Tech support are all 99% profit. The vast majority of these machines do NOT break down. They really don't make any money on the computers anymore, they haven't in years. Where they make their money is on the accessories, add items, warranties, financing...everything else they push at you. If you are buying an expensive laptop (anything over 1200 USD is expensive IMO) I suggest getting an additional yr on your warranty in case you are one of the unlucky few. That, and its a good selling point when you are wanting to upgrade in a yr or so and you are looking to sell your old one. I personally buy a new machine every yr to 18 months and I always get an extended warranty so I can sell the old one easier. That and I tend to get expensive 17" machines. Another thing I'd like to mention, is that if your machine doesn't break or otherwise have a problem within the first 6 months, its usually not going to.

Re: Laptop Warranty Scams

We purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop in Nov 2007 as a Christmas gift, stated at time of purchase. It developed a screen fault in early December 2008. On contacting Dell they insisted the warranty had expired on 6/11/08. We were sent round in circles but eventually after a few persistent emails Dell agreed to replace the screen free of charge as a one off gesture of goodwill. Laptop collected 7 Jan and returned 12 Jan as good as new. Service excellent once agreed to repair; extremely poor prior to that point.

Re: Laptop Warranty Scams

I'd agree with the need for a warranty on a laptop. For the prices that laptops go for, you can't afford not to. That said, I wouldn't agree with buying overpriced warranties from the manufacturer or the store selling them. I actually got mine from Squaretrade for a discounted price (www.squaretrade.com/laptop). All raves- service, price and quality!
